MocoSpace is a mobile-only social network with two million members and serving one billion pageviews a month (from mobile phones ). When we last wrote about MocoSpace in August , it had half as many members and pageviews. Mocospace will generate an e-mail address for each user for video upload. The photo or video’s caption will be the subject of the e-mail message. Mocospace’s functionality serves the jobs-to-be-done of a previously untapped market: nonconsumers of existing social networking sites designed to be accessed on the PC. A large portion of the US population doesn’t have constant, private access to a PC with a broadband connection, for a variety of reasons that could include on-the-go lifestyles, economic limitations, and/or remote locations.
MocoSpace?s competitors come mainly from 3 distinct areas. These are sites with lots of content and big existing social networks. MocoSpace uses browser detection to deliver either a PC formatted html page or a WAP2 xhtml-mp or WAP1 wml one depending on your browser capabilities. The browser detection seems reasonably good although I got the PC version on Opera Mini which was only marginally usable. MocoSpace and similar sites need to cover the location-based aspect of mobile social software to remain competitive.
MocoSpace is the largest social network designed specifically for mobile phones in the U.S. It also announced another milestone today as it passed the 3 million mark in registered users this month. - can be found www.mocospace.com
